Each of us have our own idea of what is beautiful and aesthetic. For most of us, it’s not necessary a set of rules that defines what makes something beautiful to or not, but rather how it touches our heart or moves our soul or the feeling it brings to our mind, like peace.
The idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder is nothing new, but it is absolutely true. While certain concepts of beauty is certainly objective, like love for each other, the shape of a rose, or a shooting star streaking across the sky, what is beautiful to each of us is assuredly subjective. This is shown in the fact that what one person considers beautiful, another does not. One person may find someone attractive, that others do not, which is why true love is so amazing; it is blind. I once had an ugly dog. Objectively, he was ugly, but subjectively he was the most beautiful dog simply because I loved him. And really, it’s what the heart feels that really matters in the long run when it comes to the idea of what beauty is.
In the words of the Apostle Paul:
“4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
In the GIF above, the gentleman finds a dreary autumn day to be beautiful. While many may disagree with him, it’s hard to deny how it makes him feel, which is what is important. Perhaps it relaxes him or maybe it breaks up the monotony of other days. Maybe the thought of staying inside and overlooking the streets from the comfort of his home, while sipping a hot cup of coffee and wrapped in a comforting blanket helps him relax. Or maybe he thinks it’s romantic, I don’t know. Personally, I enjoy days like that. I love the rain and watching it fall from within my home (when I’m caught in it, not so much. The situation changes everything).
But what do you consider beautiful? Do you think the above scene in the GIF is beautiful? Why or why not? What scenes do you consider beautiful and do they help you relax or refocus?
